Review: If you are seeking a great adventure take a look at The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger. This book takes you on the long and restless journey of a group of fishermen. Before they set sail, all the characters are introduced and all of their backgrounds are described. With this, you are able to see the reason behind their choices and understand why all of them boarded the ship to do such a dangerous job. This job is not for just anyone, it takes a brave man or woman to live at sea for months at a time. These fishermen are away from their families more than they are around them. In the business of fishing, it doesn’t matter how many hours you work, just how many good fish you bring back. This great risk sometimes delivers a great reward, and other times just disappointment. All of the men on the boat have faced trouble with their quests, but none of them will know what is in store when they take on this seemingly perfect storm.
This book is completely unique because it has no made up information in it. There are predictions but there is no uneducated thoughts included. This was not a story that was written quickly because it took so much research to accurately build the order of events and their importance the correct way.
I found the writing style that was used for the story to be so interesting and complex. Junger was unable to know exactly what happened aboard that ship, but he still made an accurate prediction of what events could have transpired. To make the story even more powerful, Junger also needed to include details about life on the boat and the weather information that showed just how powerful the storm was. Most of the time you need to have background information in order to understand such a specific topic. This is not the case with A Perfect Storm, because it gives you everything you could need.
The most memorable moments for me happened in the back stories of the fishermen. I feel like these back stories really gave me an insight to the reasons that these men would take such big risks. By far the most memorable moment in the book comes when the fishermen are about to get on the ship and sail away. So many of the fishermen had a bad feeling about it before stepping on. I think that this shows how important it is to listen to your intuition.
The Perfect Storm could be enjoyed by anyone that wants to learn more and go on a journey that few are brave enough to sign up for. This book is sometimes a little hard to follow with all of the jargon that is used, but it is well worth all of the definition hunt. People that enjoy grand adventures will enjoy this book.
