“The Perfect Storm” is a unique combination of true
literary beauty and destruction, both of which are able to describe a terrible
disaster at sea which deeply impacts a group of fishermen and their loved ones.
Junger has written a superb story recounting the days and moments before those
aboard the Andrea Gail attempt to
survive a ruthless storm.
Filled with several unique descriptions, readers
will learn about survival, family, and the importance of friendship when all
hope is gone. Junger uses a variety of artistic details that makes this book
stand out among other true stories. Junger’s particular use of synonyms of
common words challenge the reader to see past the poetry of his writing and into
the deadly experiences those on the Andrea
Gail experienced. The tone of his book changes from sentimental and
comforting, to a dark and moody mixture of emotion and thrill.
“The Perfect Storm” readily recounts a battle of
men versus the ocean, and only when you reach the end will a victor emerge. There
are a few memorable moments that deserve recognition. Readers will be able to
follow along with Captain Billy Tyne and his crew as they witness the beauty
and carnage of open sea, and swim with swordfish as if Hemingway himself was
dictating the way of life. Everything worth living for is dependent on the
fishermen to fend for their lives and survive the wrath of Mother Nature. A personal
favorite moment is the build up from when the crew decides to risk an
increasingly growing storm in order to provide food for those on shore.
“The Perfect Storm” is for the survivalist, the adventurer,
or those fond of “The Old Man and the Sea.” Junger uses this true story and
turns it into art. Anyone who has the ability to be imaginative and yet still
hold onto an acute awareness for how fragile life can be will be able to enjoy this
story.
